Cours DDL3338 – Teaching ESL – Language Arts

The course introduces future ESL teachers to the principles and techniques of teaching ESL-LA (Language Arts). Topics include: an overview of objectives and of underlying theoretical principles for ESL-LA; an comparison of the needs of high level L2 learners and their L1 peers, a comparison of the MELS English L1 and ESL-LA curricula, ideas for developing and adapting appropriate material and activities to the ESL-LA teaching context; ideas for introducing high-level ESL learners to the literature of the English-speaking world through contact with texts from Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean and the Indian sub-continent, techniques for the evaluation of advanced learners; potential uses of communication technologies in a language arts context.
